Proud as a Peafowl

Hello, chickadees.
Pride cometh before a fall indeed. What can I say? It took me a really long time to do my taxes? More like it’s taken me two weeks to come out of chocolate-Easter-egg shock.
Anyway, I’m back and imbibing some bubbles in celebration. I’ll admit I bought this bottle of San Giuliano Moscato D’Asti 2005 for the luscious label and its prideful associations, but I’ll be replenishing my supply. It’s a sweet mouthful of spring, full of bright, citrusy fruit flavors and the softest fizz to keep things light (like any good spring fling). A shy wine it isn’t. I’d love to pair it with a tart lemon/lime dessert or a course of hard cheeses.

It’s been years since anyone in my maternal family has partaken of Lenten fasting; nevertheless, when Easter rolls around, we manage to eat as if we’ve all been subsisting on gruel for forty days. This enormous savory stuffed pie is the centerpiece of our Easter table, and perhaps the greatest treasure of our inherited family recipes.
