Since you seem familar with middleeastern spices, perhaps you can help me name one.
My husband worked with a Pakistani guy and he brought in soups his wife made. There was a distictive, pungent herb, which kinda looked a bit like a beetle at first glance, but on closer inspection is a dark brown pod. I asked about it and she sent over some, but did not name it. Uncooked it was about half the size of a dime, dark brown, dry and wrinkly, and very aromatic.
